Learning Commons Policies

The Learning Commons will open at 6:55 in the mornings till 3:00 in the afternoon.

Every Kindergarten child visits the Learning Commons once a week with their class for book checkout. The Learning Commons is also open before school and throughout the day for check out, research and technology assistance. First and second grade students are allowed to come with a pass in the mornings or anytime during the day. Their teachers will sign up for specific lessons to bring in the whole class as well as having a set time bi-weekly for a 30 minute check out time.

Children must return a book in order to check out a new one. Notices will be sent home regarding books that have been checked out and not returned. Please pay careful attention to these notices and help your children return their books. We do not charge overdue fees, and children may keep chapter books longer until they are finished reading. Also, notices will be sent home if a book is turned in damaged (wet, torn pages, book falling apart) beyond repair. If a book is damaged, please send it in as soon as possible. We try our best to repair books so parents will not have to pay. However, if a book is damaged, payment will be required. You can pay for the book ($15) at one time or send in a couple of dollars a week till it is paid. A new option this year is for those who cannot pay for the book, you can send in two non-perishable food items that will be collected and donated to a local food bank. We know that this may be a good alternative for some families and it will still teach the children to be responsible.

A book basket is in each classroom on Learning Commons day, children place their books in the basket, and bring them to the library. All books are checked in, and overdue notices are printed when the class arrives for library time.

We are available to help students with book selection as well as their teacher. We make a special effort to help students find “just right books.” We also help find books that meet the child’s special interests. We do not tell a child they cannot take a certain book. Any time a parent feels a selected book is not appropriate for their child, feel free to return it to the Learning Commons.
